Intermediate Improv: Spring 2024

Class Session: June 4th – July 9th

So, you’ve tried improv. You’ve had a taste of that sweet, delicious improvised comedy, and you’re ready for more.

Good news, you little sugar fiend: we’ve got your fix. Join us for Intermediate Improv, a 6-week class Tuesdays from 7-9 PM starting June 4th. In this class, we take a deeper dive into scene work from a short-form lens and learn the skills it takes to build the perfect scene.

Description

During this class, students will learn to:

  • Review foundational/basic improv skills learned in Basic Improv
  • Understand best practices regarding boundaries and consent when improvising onstage and observe “ouch, oops”
  • Incorporate storytelling tools and story structure into scenes from a short form lens
  • Practice radical listening and staying present in scenes to provide support
  • Implement different types of support onstage during scenes
  • Create specific scenes by identifying the “who, what, where, and why” of each scene
  • Do basic pantomime/space work in scenes
  • Establish and raise the stakes on scenes to keep the audience engaged
  • Prepare for our next class level, Advanced Improv: Short Form
  • Prepare for our class showcase

When:

Tuesdays from 7-9 PM, 6/4 – 7/9 with a student performance on 7/12 at 8 PM

Where:

Empire LaunchPad at Sierra 2 Center, 2791 24th St, Room 13 (upstairs), Sacramento, CA 95818

Important Details:

Students must have completed our Basic Improv class or have previous improv training to attend. Those taking the class should attend at least 5 out of 6 classes to be included in the performance. Tuition is nonrefundable. You must be at least 18 to register.

Our venue is upstairs on floor 2. The building is wheelchair accessible (including the bathrooms and access to the second floor). Please let us know if you require any special accommodations ahead of time and we’ll be happy to help.

COVID Safety Requirements:

All students must be fully vaccinated and provide proof of vaccination (either vaccination card or digital record) on the first day of class at the door or via email.

About the Instructor

Jessilee Windhaus is a proud Sacramento local and a firm believer in the power of applied improvisation. With a background in both short form and long form comedy, she is a 20-year improv veteran who has trained with Upright Citizen’s Brigade and The Groundlings and performed in cities all across the country.
